Mai 1940. Aux "Milles", un camp de détention près d'Aix-en-Provence, ils sont près de 2000 - artistes, intellectuels, simples anonymes... - qui ont fui l'Allemagne nazie. Le gouvernement français s'apprête à les livrer aux allemands. Homme d'honneur et de devoir, C. Perrochon, commandant du camp, refuse de voir la France trahir sa parole : il embarque dans un train tous les détenus volontaires, direction Bayonne où un navire les attend. Une extraordinaire odyssée s'engage...
